If you’ve ever dreamed of being able to fly high above the rainforest, then you need to read on! This article will explain how zip lining in rainforests works and how you can experience the thrill for yourself while staying in Mackay. So many visitors to the Mackay area love the fun and adventure of Forest Flying!
What Is Forest Flying?
Forest flying is a form of zip-lining. Zip-lining involves securing a rope or cable between two points, and then using a harness, pulley and sometimes gravity to move things or people between the two points.
Zip-lining for practical purposes (e.g. moving food) has been used for thousands of years. It has been used in the Australian Outback to deliver supplies from one side of a valley to another. It has also been used by Australian troops to deliver supplies to forward positions.
But it is believed that the first attempt at zip lining for fun ended in tragedy in 1739, when Robert Cadman’s rope snapped while sliding down from Shewsbury’s St Mary’s Church.
But never fear. Today zip-lining companies use cables instead of ropes and they adhere to strict safety standards.
Forest flying involves zip-lining amongst the rainforest and Finch Hatton Gorge. The cables are up to 25 metres above the ground. You connect yourself to this cable while in a secure harness. You then use a pulley system to glide above and amongst the tree canopies.
During your 340 metre experience, you also get to see the amazing Finch Hatton Gorge from a truly unique angle. And you control how fast you glide along the cable.
And, with Forest Flying’s commitment to eco-tourism (award-winning), there is minimal impact on the environment.
Who Can Forest Fly?
In order to fly through the Finch Hatton forest, you must be:
- At least 30 kg
- Under 120 kg
Children (under 18) must be accompanied by an adult, and they don’t recommend forest flying for children under 10.
If you are fit enough to do a small bushwalk, you are fit enough to fly through the Finch Hatton forest.
What to Bring?
I recommend:
- Closed in shoes
- A hat
- Collared shirt
- Shorts
- Sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Camera with a neck strap
